home ready for spring

Is your home ready for spring?

Believe it or not, we’re close to the start of spring! Warmer, sunnier days are ahead, which is a welcome change of pace for most of us. However, is your home ready for spring? It’s important to complete some tasks in and around your house so you can enjoy the season to its fullest. Here are some things you should keep in mind!

Focus on yard and lawn care

Winter can be especially hard on our yards. A season of salt, rain, and sleet means by the time spring rolls around, our lawns need some serious work. Get your yard fertilizer ready so you can start patching up any dead areas of grass. Make sure your lawn mower is tuned up and filled with gas. If you live in an area with minimal rain, be sure you have a good system in place for lawn watering! You can also expand, or begin, your gardens. If you don’t feel super confident in your green thumb, you can start simple with hardy flowers like daffodils and geraniums. These plants are fairly low maintenance and can do well in most environments. A healthy lawn and garden can help get your home ready for spring, and support the ecosystem!

Consider exterior washing

After a long, chilly, and messy winter, the outsides of our homes can look a little worse for wear. If you feel like you need to get some of the grime off your house’s exterior, now is the perfect time! A good power wash will make your house sparkle from all angles. You can also wash your windows, both inside and out, to clear away any streaks from the winter. You may want to hire a company for this task, especially if it will involve cleaning upper floors. If you’re confident enough to take on the job yourself, though, go for it!

Do a deep clean

Spring cleaning is one of the least enjoyable parts of the season, but it must be done. For whatever reason, springtime has been established as the right time of the year to give our houses a good scrub. You might have several areas you want to tackle, from your kitchen to your living area, bathrooms, and bedrooms. Some big jobs to take on include deep cleaning any carpets and washing any throw pillows or blankets in your living space. You should think about sorting through your food cupboards in the kitchen, replacing your shower curtain liner, and snaking your drains. We know this is one of the least pleasant cleaning tasks, but it’s important!

Get your air conditioning ready

While it’s only March, it won’t be long until we have our air conditioning units blasting. Our summers are getting warmer and the need to keep our homes cool in the dead of summer is non-negotiable. The last thing you want is to try turning on the air when you need it most and realize it’s dead. Of course, you likely don’t need your AC cranked up regularly right now, but now is a good time to test it out. A professional can give it a quick inspection to make sure everything is in good working order. This is important for a couple of reasons. First, it ensures you won’t be left without cool air in the middle of July. Second, it can help extend the life of your unit. You can rest peacefully knowing your AC is in top shape!

Check for cracks

Finally, part of getting your home ready for spring is inspecting for any damage that may have occurred over the winter. Winter can encourage the formation of cracks in your foundation or driveway, which can lead to water damage inside your house. Similarly, old and worn caulking around your windows can result in tiny cracks that allow pests inside. While these sound like minor problems, water damage can cause serious issues, and you don’t want pests to have easy access to your home either! Do a quick look to make sure everything seems to be in good shape. You can also call in a professional if you want a second opinion!

Getting your home ready for spring can be a bit of a task, but it’s certainly worth it! You can also take your time with these jobs so they don’t feel so overwhelming. Plus, if you’d prefer, you can hire professionals to take care of many of these items for you! Before you know it, you’ll be all ready to enjoy the season.
